How much melatonin can my teen take?

38-year-old woman2 years ago
My 13 year old has ASD, ADHD and has a lot of trouble falling asleep. He takes Vyvanse 20 mg in the morning, Intuniv XR 1 mg 30 minutes before bedtime and melatonin 5 mg at bedtime. We avoid screens 1 hour before bedtime and he does not fall asleep anymore. What dose of melatonin can he take? He weighs 88 lbs

Hello, thank you for your question!
First of all, you should be aware that the data concerning the effectiveness of melatonin is not very conclusive, and it is mostly used in a context of jet lag or change of work shift (day-night).
The starting dose is 1 to 3mg 45 to 60 minutes before bedtime
The most important thing is to look at non-pharmacological measures to improve sleep hygiene and quality.
Here are a few of them:
  • At least 1 hour before bedtime, turn off any type of screen: computer, phone, TV, and handheld readers too. Most emit some type of light that is stimulating, as you already seem to do.
  • Regardless of bedtime, I suggest that he gets up at the same time every day, even on weekends or days off, which will help establish a sleep routine eventually.
  • Keep the bedroom just for sleeping. No reading, working, or watching TV in bed. This way, the body will associate the bedroom with sleep as soon as it gets in.
  • Never look at the clock during the night as this can be a great source of stress, so remove watches if possible.
  • He should avoid naps during the day.
  • If he has a lot of worries, (school work, etc.), encourage him to write them down in a notebook or journal at night, so he can be "reassured" that they will not be forgotten and that he can address them the next morning.
These strategies can take up to 2 weeks to implement, so work on them as you see fit, gradually, and be patient and willing.
If they don't work at all, I would advise you to see a doctor.
I hope I've been of some help to you, and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate!
