In a person with no allergies and only obesity health problem. I understand that there are no official recommendations, but are there any contraindications to the use of asa as a prophylaxis in times of covid?

Hello,
I am Laurie Carrier, a pharmacy student supervised by Nadia Lafrance.
In order to better answer your question, I need you to answer these:
1- What medications do you take on a regular basis?
2- Do you take natural health products or over-the-counter medications?
3- Do you currently have covid-19?
4- Do you have any health conditions/illnesses?

Hello,
To come back to your question about whether it is contraindicated to take aspirin:
The recommendations are currently to give heparin (aspirin is not in the recommendations) to patients who have covid-19 and have risk factors for thrombosis.
Now let's weigh the risks vs. benefits.
Risks of taking aspirin: Because of its anti-platelet effect, aspirin increases the risk of potentially serious, even fatal, bleeding. It also irritates the stomach, which can lead to reflux, dyspepsia and ulcers. If you take anti-inflammatory drugs, these risks are further increased
Benefits of aspirin: There is no benefit to taking aspirin for the prevention of thrombosis secondary to covid-19. Unfortunately, aspirin does not prevent thrombosis. If you have covid-19 and are hospitalized, the treating team will assess your risk of thrombosis and prescribe a heparin if necessary.
I do not recommend that you take aspirin for prevention.
I hope this answers your question,
Laurie Carrier, Pharmacy student
