To treat a stiff neck, is it better to apply cold or heat?

Very good question! In fact, it depends on how the torticollis occurred. If it is due to a false movement (which caused a sensation of intense heat in the neck), it is preferable to apply cold for the first few hours (at a rate of 15 minutes every hour). This will reduce the inflammation. In the following days, it will be important to replace the cold with heat, in order to soften the muscle and regain freedom of movement.

If your stiff neck has occurred without any false moves (for example, if you can't tell exactly when your symptoms started), it's best to apply heat right away.

And take note that if your symptoms worsen or the pain increases with the application of heat, this is a sign that there may be a source of inflammation to your problem and that seeking medical attention would be indicated.
