L-theanine may indeed provide some level of stress relief in some people. However, two points are not yet fully clarified by the studies conducted to date on the subject: 1) what dosage allows for the optimal effect without causing any side effects; and 2) how much of the "calming" effect is really related to the supplement, rather than a placebo effect?
In any case, you could try the trial for 3-4 weeks to see how it works for you and then make a decision if it would be possible to continue taking it long term based on the effectiveness you encounter.
