I have allergies to my dog?

26-year-old woman3 years ago
I adopted a dog and it turns out that I am probably allergic. How can I reduce my symptoms? I don't have any medical problems but I'm worried that a long term antistaminic will be bad for my health . Thank you and have a nice day.

Hello Mrs., thank you for your question! Congratulations on the adoption :D!
Using antihistamines like Claritin or Aerius (or the 'house brands') long term is both effective and safe for this type of allergy. Some people need to take them year-round and this is not a problem.
If needed, the use of a nasal corticosteroid, such as FLonase, Mosaspray or Nasacort, can also help if the antihistamine is insufficient. These do not require a prescription and are kept behind the pharmacy counter.
Other tips for you to consider: if possible, I suggest restricting access to your bedroom. If your dog does not sleep on your bed, this can greatly help avoid exposure to his hair/saliva on your pillow.
I hope this helps, and I'm available if you have any other questions!
