Hello, ferrous sulfate (300 mg) causes me severe heartburn. I was told that there is an alternative, which would cause less pain, that is available over the counter, to treat anemia. What is the name of the product? Thank you very much.

Hello, Indeed, many people who take iron sulfate as a supplement may experience heartburn. There are several types of iron supplements that are more or less expensive and can cause less heartburn. Feramax(R) is one of these products. Also, some modifications to the way you take ferrous sulfate can help reduce heartburn. How many tablets do you take per day? When and how do you take them? (Morning? supper? bedtime? fasting? with food?

It was 2 per day, with food! (Morning and evening)

You can call your pharmacy: the pharmacist will be able to discuss with you how to adjust your iron dosage to reduce this side effect, or contact your doctor to substitute iron with another better tolerated product
