Hello, I am taking Cipralex 20mg and I am currently suffering from pneumonia. I was prescribed Biaxin but I read that there was a possible interaction between the 2 drugs. Should I stop one of the 2?

Cipralex and Biaxin

Hello ! At first glance, you are right. There is indeed a theoretical interaction between Biaxin and Cipralex. Biaxin may limit your body's ability to eliminate Cipralex.
However, it is important to understand that the analysis of a potential interaction is complex. For example, in your situation, Cipralex has an efficient alternative elimination pathway, which limits its impact. In fact, many reliable sources of information do not list this interaction as clinically significant!
I do not advise you to stop your medication. Pneumonia is a serious infection, and taking your full course of antibiotics is mandatory.
If this interaction were to have an effect on you, it could cause you to be more drowsy, nauseated, or dizzy. If these are bothersome, you may want to temporarily decrease your Cipralex from 20 to 10 mg once a day and then increase it to your usual dose 48 hours after you finish your Biaxin.
I hope you will find my answer satisfactory!
