Does Fetzima work on pain and anxiety, and is it fattening?

Hello, I suffer from chronic pain following a car accident. I am currently taking Cipralex since I did not tolerate the Cymbalta prescribed by the pain clinic. My doctor told me about Fetzima recently.

Also: Should I expect a change in libido? Is it really effective in reducing pain? What are the differences between Cipralex, Cymbalta and Fetzima? Thank you very much.

Hello Mrs., Many interesting questions! I will try to answer as clearly as possible. 1) Fetzima has indeed been proven effective in reducing anxiety symptoms according to several recent studies. 2) Weight gain is often relative. One of the first symptoms associated with anxiety that disappears most quickly when taking medications like Fetzima is loss of appetite. This results in a better appetite, which may be reflected in a slight movement of the needle on the scale. Weight gain with Fetzima is less than with other drugs in this class. 3) Sexual dysfunction affects less than one percent (1%) of women using Fetzima. 4) Some experts are beginning to comment on the effectiveness of Fetzima for pain. However, the drug is not indicated for the treatment of chronic pain (i.e., Health Canada does not allow doctors to prescribe the drug simply for chronic pain). 5) The differences between Cipralex, Cymbalta and Fetzima are primarily in their mechanism of action. Cymbalta and Fetzima are more similar, but studies suggest that Fetzima has slightly fewer side effects. I hope that I have answered your questions! Stéphane Villeneuve, pharmacist
