Hello, what are the risks of getting a blood clot after receiving the Astra-Zeneca vaccine?

My father is 55 years old. He has severe asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure. He has to have eye surgery (cataract) at the hospital at the end of April. He concluded with his family doctor that it would be better to have the Astra-Zeneca vaccine to have some protection before going to the hospital. - What is the risk of a blood clot (statistic in numbers)? - Given the risk of blood clots, should he/she take precautions 20 days after the dose (e.g., exercise every hour, monitor blood sugar levels (test blood sugar 4x/day), avoid biking or other injury-prone activities) - What are the warning signs for blood clots? - Given the covid-19 outbreaks and the increase in variants, do you think he should cancel his surgery (cataract) and reschedule in a few months (to private)? Can we predict more risky periods for viruses based on trends in others, such as influenza or SARS? I appreciate your time. I understand that there may be very few concrete answers to my questions, but if possible have some articles from the scientific literature that could support the recent data. Thank you for your time!

Hello,
The current estimated risk is less than 100 cases for 25 million doses (see the notice issued by the company at
COVID is a major cause of clots, so there is much more risk of suffering from clots with COVID than with the vaccine.
There are no special measures to take.
Cataract surgery is not a bleeding risk procedure, nor is it considered invasive, so there is no need to postpone it.
Symptoms of clots to watch for include (see company release):
Patients should seek medical assistance immediately if they have the following symptoms
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • swelling in your leg
  • persistent abdominal (belly) pain
  • neurological symptoms, including severe and persistent headaches or blurred vision
  • tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the site of injection.
There are many more benefits than risks to receiving the vaccine in my opinion.
Have a great evening!
