cold and 17 weeks pregnant

41-year-old woman5 years ago
I am pregnant and I have a cough that has persisted for more than 4 days. I don't have a fever but a lot of discomfort leading to sweating, muscle aches (especially in the intercostal muscles and shoulders). I'm starting to have pain points in my right hip. My appointment with my gynecologist is in 5 days... I don't see any improvement with the gargle with saline water. I'm having honey, lemon and ginger warmed up... the solution alleviates the pain a bit but doesn't stop my insomnia. Should I go and see a doctor first? if so, who? one of your colleagues or at the hospital? Thank you for your help!

Hello, thank you for your question
Your infection could be trivial as well as a case requiring a consultation (influenza) so I need to assess the context of your condition a little more thoroughly
First, did you suddenly become ill 4 days ago or is it a slow onset
Second, have you had allergies in the past?
Third, have any other family members recently become ill or been diagnosed with influenza?
Fourth, have you had the flu shot this year?
Thank you.

Hello!
i understand your questions and your uncertainty.
i do have a lot of allergies but I didn't take anything because I was told to just take Tylenol. I have been sneezing regularly since the spring (when I found out I was pregnant). I must say though that it has been more intense in the last week and a half.
I had about the same symptoms 3 weeks ago. I even had to take 2 sick days last time. I had a scratchy throat since Tuesday PM. incessant coughing and it's still not drying.
My spouse was sick too but he was on a job/division change. a little coughing but much more expectation and runny nose which I don't have. It felt more like stress than a cold to be honest
My spouse is vaccinated, I am not. This is the first time in 4 years that I have had a cold... I didn't see the need. But following my online research and my condition, and considering that my DPA is for November 27th, this was part of the questions/requests to be made to my dre during my appointment
I'm not really worried about the flu... no fever, no secretions, no runny nose... but more about the fact that I'm afraid of going into labor prematurely due to the never ending rate and the fact that I've had the same symptoms twice in 3 weeks. I am afraid of having a placenta detachment and losing the child. Especially that between the 2 weeks of "cold" I spent a week being blocked in my 5th back and my hips are still clicking when I walk... that worries me more. And that my insomnia came back (I was already followed for sleep disorder) I then went to consult in emergency 4x my chiropractor and 1 session with an acupuncturist specialized in pregnancy
I tried to have my gynecological appointment brought forward but without success.
i would like you to have a little more information. I think I have answered adequately, if there is anything that is not super clear, let me know. And thank you so much for your answers and your time.

Hello Miss,
Yes, it seems to me that it is a common cold with probably an allergic component.
The cough can be due to allergies and a runny throat. So please know that being pregnant there are still safe treatment options for allergies. An anti-histamine product called Chlor-Tripolon is available and there is a lot of reassuring data on its use in pregnancy although it causes drowsiness. Alternatively, Claritin or Reactin would be our second choice in the same range and would not cause drowsiness. So you could treat your symptoms with either of those products. In addition to continuing nasal hydration with saline
If the cough is recalcitrant, a cough suppressant such as dextromethorphan is still an acceptable and appropriate choice in pregnancy. I suggest that you go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for advice because some syrups contain other ingredients in combination. Furthermore, he will make sure that there are no interactions with your other medications
Don't worry, everything should be fine in the next few days and you will get back to sleep which will help you recover
If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact us

Thank you! Finally, I had to go to the hospital because after a big coughing fit I had some bleeding. So I didn't take a chance. The hospital after an ultrasound told me that there was no problem
It is interesting to know that I can continue to take my Rectin without danger for the baby
Thank you again for everything, and good luck! :)
