Can spironolactone cause diarrhea?

31-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, I've been having some of these episodes for a few times now and I would like to know if they are related to the medication I'm taking. Since May I take Sprironolactone 25 mg 2 co 1x a day to control sebum due to persistent adult acne. Since Friday I have diarrhea, heartache, stomach cramps, headaches. It's not the first time it's happened and it's not covid and no one around me has this type of symptoms, so I'm ruling out gastro! For some time now I have been having regular stomach pains, headaches, dizziness. Also, I forgot to take my tablets for 3 days, is it possible to suffer from withdrawal? Finally, I have a very strong intolerance to lactose and I saw that in the non-medicinal ingredients there was some, is it possible that I react to that after 5 months of taking this medication? I remember having stopped the contraceptive pill for this reason! Is it possible that I react as strongly to the medication? If so, what can I do? I will see the dermatologist again in early November. Thank you

Hello ma'am, thank you for your question!
Diarrhea and stomach pain are possible side effects of spironolactone. However, it is rare that these effects appear several months after starting this medication. Usually it occurs within the first few days
Although it is not impossible, it is unlikely to be due to the drug...
That being said, discontinuing this medication does not cause withdrawal effects
Also, the amount of lactose in the tablet is unlikely to cause such pronounced symptoms.
If you notice that your symptoms persist, you should consult a physician for a thorough evaluation of your condition
I hope this has been helpful to you and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
