How long does penicillin take to work on a throat infection?

24-year-old woman5 years ago
Hello! The doctor diagnosed me with an abscess in my throat and prescribed 600 mg of Penicillin V to be taken twice a day for 10 days. How long does it take for the antibiotic to start working and reduce the symptoms? Thank you for your help!

Hello, first of all, thank you for your question. First of all, the treatment with penicillin V prescribed by your doctor is the first choice of treatment for throat infections. Penicillin reduces the duration of the infection by a few days and minimizes the risk of complications. We usually expect the antibiotic to start working between day 3 and 4. For some, improvement may be faster, but for others, treatment may take a little longer. If you are bothered by the pain with the abscess I encourage you to take ibuprofen at the rate of 2 tablets of 200mg (i.e. 400mg) every 6 hours with food to improve tolerance on the stomach. Don't forget that even if the treatment works and the pain goes away, you still have to finish the entire 10 days of treatment. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate. I hope I have answered your question. Jean-Félix Côté, pharmacist
