Hello, I would like to know if taking pantoloc every day (40 mg) can be harmful to my health in the long term (several years and more)? I tried to stop this medication but I have to take zantax. Is it less harmful to take zantax every day? I would like to know if it is safe to take zantax every day. Thank you

Hello Ma'am,
Indeed, there may be long-term impacts with taking Pantoloc. We are talking about an increased risk of bone fracture, hypomagnesemia, Clostridium difficile colitis, vitamin B12 deficiency and interstitial nephritis.
There was even a signal in one or two studies that the risk of dementia was somewhat higher in long-term users of drugs in the Pantoloc family (which are called PPIs). We're not sure about the latter, though.
In any case, it seems that a lot of these effects are caused by the drug's effect on stomach pH. And in this case, Zantac might actually be less of a problem.
Also be aware that there is a well-defined method of stopping the PPI and avoiding a return of stomach pain symptoms. This practice is called deprescribing. I refer you to the following document: http://www.cfp.ca/content/cfp/63/5/e253.full.pdf, which I am sure will help you understand why more and more people are trying to stop taking Pantoloc (or at least reduce it). Go to page 257 to see the deprescription chart.
Good day and happy holidays to you,
