Urinary tract infection and Macrobid: time to improvement?

38-year-old woman5 years ago
I am currently on day 2 (3 pills) of taking Macrobid for a bladder infection. So far I have not seen any improvement. After how long should I consider that the medication is not working?

Thank you for your question! In the case of a urinary tract infection, an improvement of the symptoms should usually occur within 48 to 72 hours after the beginning of the treatment. It is therefore too early to conclude that the antibiotic prescribed to you is ineffective. If after taking 6 doses of MacroBid you still do not notice any improvement, it would be appropriate to consult a doctor again for a re-evaluation. Please note that an improvement in symptoms does not mean that the symptoms have completely disappeared. The infection can usually take up to 5-7 days to completely resolve.
