I have severe insomnia during pregnancy and I don't know what to do. Am I allowed to take anything over the counter?

Hello,
Regarding insomnia during pregnancy, the first solution is really to adapt your sleep hygiene in order to promote natural sleep. The following two references give good advice on this subject.
If one wants to take a medication, melatonin seems to be the agent that presents the least risk to the fetus. However, since it is a natural product, there are few studies on the subject, so little is known about the real impact on the development of the child. I suggest using the smallest dose possible (3 mg, maybe even 1/2 tablet) for the shortest period of time possible.
If it's a bigger issue that impacts your quality of life during the day, feel free to discuss it with your doctor.
I hope this answers your question,
Sandrine
