I have had eczema just above my left eyelid and just below my right eye since about May 8. What should I do?

Both areas are located where the skin is very thin. In the pharmacy, I was recommended hydrocortisone 0.5% for a period of time but the problem persists. Should I consult? Should I continue to apply the cream morning and night? Should I go to the pharmacy to get a stronger cream? I apply an excellent moisturizer on my face every day. Thank you

Hello,
For your eyelid eczema, I would advise you to:
  • Detect the allergen (cause) that is causing this eczema and stop exposing yourself to it if possible
  • Moisturize your eyelids with a special eye cream like: la roche-posay hydraphase intense eyes or Avene moisturizing eye cream
  • As you have been advised, you can use low concentrated cortisone (ask for 0.5%) 1 application 1 to 2 times a day for maximum of one week. We will take care to apply it close to the eyelid below or above but not directly on the eyelid near the eye (unless indicated by a doctor)
  • To answer your question, we will not use a stronger cream given the thinness of the eyelids (unless indicated by a doctor)
  • When your eyelids are hyper-reactive (swollen eyelids) avoid any application of cream to avoid massaging the eyelids because of the presence of mast cells. Mast cells are the cells involved in the inflammatory process and they contain histamine inside. With the massage of the eyelid, the mast cells degranulate and release histamine, thus increasing the inflammation. Once the episode has passed, you can resume moisturizing the eyelids.
  • The use of oral antihistamines such as Reactin can help with itching but it is not mandatory.
