Guarana and breastfeeding

31-year-old woman5 years ago
Hello, I talked to my nutritionist about an energy drink that contains guarana (guru). She recommended that I ask a pharmacist. This drink only contains 100mg of caffeine which would be fine for breastfeeding according to the recommendations. But I know that they say that it is not recommended to take drinks with guarana if you are breastfeeding. However, if the maximum daily dose of caffeine is respected, is it correct? Because finally guarana is not recommended because of the caffeine? Thank you

Hello Ms,
What you need to understand at the outset is that there is little scientific data on the use of natural health products during pregnancy and breastfeeding and for good reason, it is not ethical to conduct trials on pregnant or breastfeeding women...
That said, for guarana, this product seems safe and indeed the concern during breastfeeding comes from the caffeine and therefore if the maximum daily dose of caffeine is respected (maximum 300 mg from all sources) its use seems acceptable. As for energy drinks, they often contain other ingredients, for GURU: ginseng, echinacea, they also seem safe. The key is moderation, and if you notice that your child is having more difficulty sleeping it is obvious that you should stop. I hope I have helped you.
