Since last Saturday I have a good stomach bug that won't leave me alone .... I spoke with a doctor on Tuesday and everything seemed to be normal. After that I had Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday off, the symptoms had diminished enormously and now I have incredible nausea and diarrhea again. Moreover, I think that my spouse caught it too. What can I do? Gravols are no longer enough ....

Hello Ma'am,
Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestine caused by a virus, bacteria or parasite. Symptoms of gastroenteritis usually last 24 to 72 hours. However, they can last up to 7 to 10 days in some cases.
Here are some tips that can help:
  • Use rehydration solutions. To avoid triggering vomiting, it's best to take in small amounts of fluid first. To alleviate nausea, take a tablespoon of fluid about every 10 minutes. Then you can gradually increase the amount of fluid you take in. You should drink between one and two liters of fluid a day (rehydration solution, juice, broths, etc.).
  • You can gradually return to a solid diet. It is best to start with easily digestible foods, such as white rice, crackers, or toast.
  • Avoid fatty, spicy, or strong-smelling foods
  • Prefer cold foods
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and undiluted soft drinks and juices.
  • Use probiotics to bring the disturbed flora back into balance and to reduce the duration and intensity of diarrhea. In general, lactobacilli are the most recommended probiotics.
If with all of his methods and good hydration, nausea persists even with regular use of Gravol, I suggest you consult your physician.
I recommend you also consult if:
  • you have blood in your stool or your stool is black;
  • you have diarrhea with severe abdominal pain;
  • you have diarrhea, severe thirst, have not urinated in more than 12 hours;
  • you have frequent vomiting that does not decrease after 4 to 6 hours;
  • there is stool or blood (red in color or looks like coffee grounds) in your vomit;
  • your general condition deteriorates (weakness, drowsiness, irritability, confusion)
  • you have diarrhea and fever (more than 38ºC or 100.4ºF) that has persisted for more than 48 hours
  • you have persistent signs of dehydration despite using rehydration solutions:
  • increased thirst;
  • dry lips, tongue, or mouth;
  • deepening of the eyes in the sockets;
  • loss of skin elasticity (when pinched, the skin is slow to return to its original shape);
  • decreased urination
Do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions.
Happy day,
