My 2 and a half year old son has had a sore throat for 4 days and this morning his temperature was 37.5.

Where did you measure the temperature: under the arm, in the mouth or rectal?
Sore throat with fever are 2 possible symptoms of COVID, so Public Health rules say you should keep it at home until the symptoms are over. A COVID test could also be done to see if COVID is responsible or not. You could call the COVID line to see if a test is indicated.
If there is nasal congestion, you can flush the sinuses with saline (Hydrasense) otherwise just treat the pain/fever with Advil or Tylenol.
