Breast pain, redness and warmth. Mild fever. Since 2 days

31-year-old woman3 years ago
I have had a prescription for mastitis in the past and I am sure I will get another one. Same symptoms, mild fever. Do I absolutely have to consult a doctor or can I get it prescribed at the pharmacy directly? Thank you

Hello,
What non-pharmacological and pharmacological measures are you using to try to get relief? Mastitis is often caused by a blocked duct.

Okay. Here are some other suggestions:
non-medical treatments :
- Effectively drain the affected breast If possible, direct the baby's chin or nose toward the indurated area when suckling.
Continue breastfeeding on both sides.
- Apply ice between feedings (10-15 min/2 hrs) to decrease inflammation
- Apply warm compresses or take a warm bath before feeding or expressing milk
- Give a gentle massage before or during feeding.
- Get plenty of rest and hydration.
If the fever and flu-like symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, a medical consultation will be required, since the pharmacist cannot prescribe antibiotics in this circumstance.
