Diarrhea: is it because I am pregnant or because of my trip?

37-year-old woman5 years ago
Hello, I am 7 weeks pregnant. I am taking zoloft, synthroid and centrum prenatal. For the past few days (3-4) I have had loose stools and now very liquid, whereas I am usually rather constipated. I have no fever or symptoms other than bloating and gas. I have been back from Mexico for 7 days. Could my diarrhea be related to a travel virus/bacteria or could it be related to pregnancy hormones? Thank you

Hello, I would recommend that you consult a doctor, as you have just returned from Mexico, so it could be traveler's diarrhea, which requires an antibiotic prescribed by the doctor. Traveler's diarrhea usually presents with at least 3 unformed stools in 24 hours and may be accompanied by other symptoms: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever, mucus or blood in the stool. Your symptoms may have several possible causes, but since you are pregnant, it is best to seek help to confirm the diagnosis for the safety of the baby. While waiting to consult, your liquid stools can dehydrate you, which is harmful for you and also for the pregnancy, so I recommend that you take a rehydration solution, which can easily be found in pharmacies (example: Pedialyte, Gastrolyte or other).

Okay, thank you. I have no nausea, no vomiting, no fever, no blood in the stool. I took a dose of immodium at bedtime yesterday. I have some gastro electrolyte packets. I will try to see a doctor. Thanks
