Is it safe to make homemade nasal saline?

I was wondering if there was any danger in using iodized salt to make a homemade saline solution for the nose to replace the Netirinse or Sinus Rinse packets.

Hello, when using Neti-Rinse, it is very important to use the sachets that are sold for this purpose. The reason is that these are sterile and will ensure that the water is exactly the right concentration of salt. You should not use salt at home because there is a risk of contamination and also that the concentration is not adequate. Water with a higher concentration of salt can cause problems with the nose, including irritation. I would like to remind you that the source of the water is also very important. If you use tap water, it is very important to boil it first and then let it cool down. Alternatively, you can use bottled water without boiling it. If you do not follow these guidelines, you run the risk of worsening the infection with non-sterile water. Although nasal saline solutions have some restrictions, these treatments are still an option of choice to relieve nasal discharge, symptoms of colds, congestion and allergies. Hoping to have answered your question, Sincerely, Jean-Félix Côté, pharmacist
