Hello,
For a child older than 6 months, the use of sunscreen is recommended. It should be applied about 30 minutes before exposure to the sun, and every two hours thereafter (or every time he gets out of the water if he is swimming).
Use the cream only on the areas exposed to the sun (face, arms, legs) and prefer long clothing and the use of a hat. The goal here is to provide as much shade as possible so that the child does not have to be "creamed" from head to toe, while being well protected.
As for the choice of cream, I highly recommend mineral screen products. You can find them in several brands. These products reflect light (which is why they leave a white filter on the skin) and cause fewer allergic reactions in children, while protecting them better. These products are also more resistant to swimming.
