Cortisone and baby skin

39-year-old woman5 years ago
My 4 month old baby suffers from eczema on his stomach, face and arms (redness, itching). I went to a pharmacy for advice and they recommended aveeno baby cream for eczema. But my little coconut has a reaction to this cream (lots of little red and itchy spots). I went to see a doctor in a clinic who told me that she didn't know much about babies and advised me to go see a pediatrician. She gave me a prescription of 1% cortisone. I talked to my friends about my situation and many of them seem to say that 1% cortisone is much too high for a 4 month old baby. So I don't dare apply it to her anymore. Is this an adequate percentage for a 4 month old baby in your opinion? Also, what cream would you recommend for my little baby, knowing that he does not tolerate aveeno? Thank you for your answer!

Hello !
Thank you for your question!
Hydrocortisone 1% can be adequate from the age of 3 months, especially in the presence of eczema. It is usually applied twice a day in the morning and evening in a thin layer only on the affected areas. If there is no improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, it is recommended to stop and to consult a doctor
Note that it may also be appropriate to start with a lower dosage, i.e. hydrocortisone 0.5%, which can be purchased over the counter in pharmacies (you will find it under the name Cortate 0.5%, Hyderm 0.5% or in private labels in pharmacies under the name hydrocortisone 0.5%)
On the other hand, an adverse reaction to Aveeno cream is rare, but not impossible. In this case, I would opt for a more neutral cream, but rich in ceramides (a lipid essential to the constitution of the skin) which will allow a good regeneration of the healthy skin. Cutibase and Cerave creams would be good options.
I hope to have answered your question and remain available for further information!
