I finished a course of antivirals for shingles a week ago, but I'm still itchy. Are there any over-the-counter products I could use (besides Advil, tried and didn't really work for me)?

Diagnosed with shingles and started treatment on February 6, took anti-viral drugs for 7 days. Started Prednisolone 1% drops, 4 x/day on Feb. 17, must continue for a few more weeks. Itching/burning sensation around eye, either due to shingles residuals or drops. Over the counter treatments to help with this symptom?

Hello,

To treat itching, we could suggest Benadryl 25 mg 1 to 2 tablets every 6 hours. Be careful, Benadryl can make you sleepy (Be careful when driving)

To treat the burning sensation around the eye, cold water compresses could be applied as needed

If the condition does not improve within 1 week or the intensity of the symptoms increases, I advise you to reconsult.

Thanks for the quick answer! Could another antihystamine like Aerius have the same effect for itching, without the sedative effect? What do you think about calamine?
Antoine Karam · 7 years ago
Aerius has less anti-itching activity than Benadryl unfortunately. However, the advantages of Aerius (or Claritin or Reactin) would be the once daily intake and no drowsiness.

As far as the calamine goes, yes, it could be an interesting choice. Be careful not to get it in your eyes
