Is clindamycin compatible with breastfeeding?

36-year-old woman5 years ago
There is a lot of information on the internet that Riva-clindamycin is not recommended for breastfeeding, yet my doctor prescribed it. Is it dangerous for my 3 week old baby? The doctor is not sure what type of infection I have, it is in the vaginal lips. I was given this prescription after finishing a dose of antibiotics for endometritis following my delivery. No allergies in my case.

Hello, Thank you for your question! There is indeed a lot of conflicting information on the internet, you have come to the right place for an answer! The risk often mentioned on the web is the one related to the fact that a small amount of medication can pass through the milk, sometimes, but rarely, causing a change in the stool (more liquid stools). With the information you mention such as the situation and the fact that you just finished another antibiotic, it is more likely that the risks of not treating your infection are greater than the risks to the baby.
To put it in perspective, this is an antibiotic that is sometimes given to newborns to treat certain infections and the amount that potentially "crosses over" into the milk is only 4% of the dose that your baby would be given if he or she were to be treated with this antibiotic. So don't stop breastfeeding during treatment!
Don't hesitate to come back here or to the pharmacy if you notice any changes in your baby's stools that worry you!
Congratulations on the birth of your child! Have a great day, Michael
