Can citalopram increase the intoxicating effect of alcohol?

51-year-old woman5 years ago
I take citalopram (10 mg). I told my doctor that I can't handle alcohol as well as I used to. She told me that citalopram can double the effect of alcohol. I know that alcohol has a depressant effect, but on the other hand, can citalopram increase the drunken effect of alcohol for example?

Hello, thank you for your question, in fact the impact associated with the combined use of citalopram and alcohol is that the alcohol can increase the side effects (or in other words, the toxicity) of citalopram, particularly at the psychomotor level. So, to the feeling, you could interpret this as an increased effect of alcohol, but it is rather the combined effect that causes this. So, in conclusion, it is not the citalopram that increases the effect of alcohol, but rather the opposite. All in all, it is not a desirable combination. It is possible to take a little alcohol with citalopram, but in moderation. I hope this answers your question. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need more information. Have a nice day! Emmanuelle
