What over-the-counter products do you recommend to treat acne?

I stopped my contraceptive pill 2 years ago and since then I have had acne which has appeared quite intensely. I thought it was a hormonal imbalance so I waited for it to go away but 2 years later it is still very present and I don't know what to do to make it go away... I apply salycilic acid 2% every day sometimes even twice a day locally with a good cleanser that also contains salicylic acid. My skin is not dry... What products or solutions would you recommend? My acne is localized on my cheeks, from the temples to the chin.

Hello, Acne is an uncomfortable skin problem that unfortunately can persist over the years. It is more present during adolescence, but some adults will also be affected. Acne can be related to hormones, but there are many other factors involved (inflammation, bacteria, skin type). The contraceptive pill does have a beneficial effect on acne. In fact, some people take it only for that reason. So when you stopped taking it, you lost this beneficial effect and the acne reappeared. This does not mean that the cause of your acne is only hormonal, but only that the pill was controlling the problem.

Among the products available on the shelves, we usually prefer those made from benzole peroxide (ex: Benzagel) which has an effect against inflammation and against bacteria that cause acne. Salicylic acid is an irritating ingredient for the skin that we do not prefer. I recommend that you ask your pharmacist for advice on the products available. Also, in terms of cleansers, it is recommended to use a gentle, non-comedogenic and drug-free product (e.g. cetaphil, specto eczema)

Please note that if the options on the shelves do not work, there are prescription products available for acne. Sarah-Yan Chagnon, pharmacist
